Plans to expand Walney offshore wind farm

Nov 7, 2014   //   by Kim Alviar   //   New and Views  //  No Comments

The Walney offshore wind farm is located approximately 15km off Walney Island, Cumbria. It currently has 102 turbines and fortunately the plans have been confirmed that it will expand by triple the size! Construction will commence in 2017 and will become one of the biggest offshore wind farms in the world. Its current turbine type is Siemens 3.6 MW, but a spokesman for DONG Energy says it hasn’t yet been decided on which turbines will be used in the expansion, it will likely be the newer generation of 6-8 MW.

All the new turbines should be fully installed by 2019 and 230 new jobs would be provided during the project. Hubb den Rooijen, the head of offshore wind says: “We are delighted to see such positive decisions coming through the planning process, which further support the UK’s position as a global leader in offshore wind.”
